The Department of Economics has been offering programmes of study leading to three year degree program in B.A. (Hons.) Economics and a two year program in M.A. Economics. B.A. Economics is one of the most sought after subject of the students at DAV Collge. It has a balanced course content adequately covering Principles of Economics (both at micro and macro level) and quantitative techniques. It also gives a complete view of development of Indian Economy along with its current problems. Fair coverage of Money and Financial Markets and Public Economics is also done. Graduates can look out for direct placement in government and non-government organizations in India as well as abroad. They may pursue Masters in Economics or specialized education at well known business-management schools. The faculty consists of well-qualified, highly dedicated and experienced teachers.
Courses: Perhaps the most important subject in humanities with applications in all fields of knowledge be it science, arts or commerce. It is the basis of the fastest emerging inter disciplinary studies. Activities of the department since 1st Jan, 2000 : Two lecturers obtained Ph.D degree and their thesis were highly appreciated. One lecturer has completed her thesis and is to be submitted for evaluation. Lecturers attended GOC and Refresher Courses conducted by GNDU Amritsar, Jamia Milia Islamia University, New Delhi, Punjab University, Chandigarh. Members of the department participated in different National, State and Local level Seminars and Conferences by acting as Resource Person, by presenting papers and as delegates held at different places – colleges and universities some are life members of Indian economics Association. A National Seminar on ‘Banking and Insurance sector in changing economic Scenario’ was successfully held. The seminar was sponsored by the UGC. A National Seminar on ‘Unemployment problem trends and challenges’ is to be held shortly and for this a grant of Rs.80,000 has been sanctioned out of which Rs.70,000/- has been received by the College. The seminar is under UGC scheme. More Project reports on various topics have been submitted to the UGC for further action. The department arranged extension lectures for the students by the eminent economists like Prof. Sucha Singh Gill, Prof. Satish Verma, Prof. P. S. Reikhy. Some heads of banking sector also gave their valuable views about the current economic conditions. Prof. B. S. Ghumman delivered a lecture on “WTO and India”. The department organized educational tours to different places and commercial establishments. Students took an active part in these tours. All the members of the department take an active interest and participate in the college activities and administration. They are fully associated with the conduct of examination, sports, extra curricular activities, staff council, organizing of college functions, activities connected with the finance, students welfare etc. They give their full cooperation to the Principal. The members of the department take up assignments given by other departments for teaching ‘the subjects relating to economics,’ to their students. Sometimes, different institutions from different places approach the principal for the services of our lecturers. With the approval of the principal, we provide our teaching faculty. All the members of the department take an active interest in the students’ activities and guide them in various ways. Student-teacher relationship is an important part of our daily functioning. Suggestions and views of the students are invited, discussed and implemented, wherever required. Students are given assignments to be written as well as for discussion. These assignments are evaluated and guidelines for further improvement are provided. They are encouraged to discuss the matter. As a result of these efforts, 29 students (since 2000) qualified UGC/NET test. Many students were selected as lecturer in different colleges. About 15 students are working as officers in the banking and insurance sector. Some students are running their own business. Some students have gone abroad for studies as well as for employments. Efforts are made to provide more and more knowledge to the students and for this purpose new books are purchased for the college library.
