Activities of Food Technology Department of DAV College Jalandhar from March 2001 to 2006
Seminars
1. In Year 2001 Seminar was organized on the topic “Role of Food Technology in New Millennium” was Resource Person stressed on the point that Raw Food needs to have value addition so as to increase its nutrition & shelf life. Food Technology plays a prominent role in New Millennium in ensuring food security.
2. In Year 2002 our department organized a seminar on “Processed Food Status and Needs”. The resource persons for this were:
(a) Prof. Narpinder Singh- Head, Deptt. of Food Science & Technology, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar .
(b) Prof. F.C. Shukla – Prof., Deptt. of Food Sc. & Tech., PAU, Ludhiana.
This seminar was sponsored by “Metro Milk Food Ltd.”, Jalandhar.
Resource Persons emphasized there is a need to increase the processing of food material due to changes in social economic culture increase in nuclear families and both partners are working. Processed food industry can generate employment for 4 crore people and reduce the wastage of food products.
3. In year 2004, a seminar was organized on “Food Biotechnology”. The resource persons were:
(a) Dr. Amarjeet Kaur from Deptt. of Food Sc. & Tech., PAU, Ludhiana
(b) Dr. Poonam from Deptt. of Food Sc. & Tech., PAU, Ludhiana
4. Resource persons stressed that food biotechnology is going to play crucial role in fighting food insecurity malnutrition and production of functional foods.
Academic Tours:
Our Department oraganizes various Industrial Tours to appraise the students with latest technological development. Industries visited are:

Training and Placement of students:
The students are sent for six week training at various Food Industries (Both Indian and MNC’s)
Students are placed in reputed food processing industries such as Nestle, Moga, Pepesi Foods Ltd. Channo, GSK- Nabha, Cremica, Phillaur etc.

His academic achievements include:
Attended a Refresher Course on “Total Quality Management in Dairy Processing” under aegis of centre of advanced studies in Dairy Tech., DT Division, NDRI Karnal from March – 2001 to 30-3-2001.
Attended Refresher Course on “Advances in Food Science and Technology” from 9.11.2001 to 9.12.2001 organized by the Deptt. of Food Tech., Guru Jambeshwar University, Hissar.
Participated in workshop on “National and International Food Regulations” held at GNDU, Amritsar on 11.11.2002.
Attended a Food Expo in Maharaja Palace at Ludhiana in December 2006.
Participated in winter school on “Recent Advances in Oil Seeds Processing and by Product Utilization including use of Biotechnological Tools” at central Institute of Post harvest engineering and Technology at Ludhiana from 14.09.2004 to 4.10.2004.
Attended and contributed an abstract in UGC sponsored conference entitled “Brain storming Session on Need of Biotechnology Education” held at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar on 5th -6th February, 2005.
He was awarded a grant of 90,000 by UGC for executing a Minor Research Project on “Production of Poly β-hydroxy butyrate, a Biodegradable Plastic Polymer from Microorganisms Isolated from Soil” in March 2005 in area of Microbial-Biotechnology. This work was presented in the Punajb Science Congress at Sunam.
He was invited as a resource person in two day National seminar on “Perspectives in Microbial and Food Technology” and presented a paper on “Role of Microorganisms in Traditional and Fermented Foods” held on 24-25th November, 2005 at Mehar Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Sector-36, Chandigarh.
He attended & presented a paper in poster session at National symposium on “New Horizons in Fermentation & Food Biotechnology” 2006 organised by Deptt. of Biotechnology, Punjabi University, Patiala.
Participated in National Conference on Emerging Opportunities in processed Food Sector” organized by Assocham on 11.04.2006 in Shivalik View Hotel, Chandigarh.
He participated in National seminar on “Changing Food Patterns Junk food/Fast Food/Processed Food and their effect on Nutritional Status” organized by SD College for Women, Jalandhar on 31st October, 2006.
He published various “Articles on Food Science & Technology” in leading Newspapers of India.
