A two-day science fair started at DAV College here today. Students displayed models based on the theme of “Science and technology for sustainable development.” The students successfully presented the ever-changing field of science through static and functional models.

As many as hundred models from the departments of physics, chemistry, mathematics, bio-technology, zoology, geography and food science technology form various colleges and schools were on display. One such model, which attracted the fancy of many students, was the aero-modelling display by NCC cadets of 1 Punjab Air Squadron, NCC, Jalandhar, from DAV College, Jalandhar. The model carried the motto of “Join NCC to be a part of the armed forces.”

In one of the functional models, students virtually brought to life the various war aircraft, including MiG 21, Mirage 2000, AN-32, Hawk-200 mk, RC Power, RC Glider, Senior Peace Maker and Speed models. “Our aim behind making these models is to make the youth aware of the aero functioning and various flying objects,” said cadet Kapil Sethi, a student of B.Sc (IT)-IInd year. Another functional model which received applaud from the students was “In-silico drug designing” made by students of HMV College, Jalandhar. Explaining their model, Rimpi, a student of M.Sc (bioinformatics)-IInd year said, “The model is designed keeping in mind the latest advancements in the field of drugs manufacturing. We have shown how drugs can be manufactured through computers. The model is already functional in some of the top pharma companies, including Ranbaxy and Cipla,” she said.

The fair was inaugurated by director-cum-principal, DAVIET, C.L. Kochhar. Addressing the students on the occasion, he said, “With this science fair the students would get an opportunity to show their hidden talent.”

A gala Convocation was organized in the auditorium of D A V College, Jalandhar. Prof G K Chadha, Hon’ble Member, Economic Advisory Council of Prime Minister & Hon’ble C.E.O, South Asian University, New Delhi was Chief Guest on this occasion. He was received by Principal Dr. V K Tewari, Vice-Principal Prof. Satish Tandon, Vice-Principal R K Parashar, Registrar M S Shourie and Member of Academic Council. After the Guard of honour the chief guest was introduced to members of faculty. The function started with the light of lamp by chief guest. As per tradition, the ved mantra recitation was performed. Principal Dr. V K Tewari formerly welcomed the chief guest. He called Prof. G K Chadha as a distinguished scholar, an acknowledge economist, an astute administrator and above all an educationist par-excellence. Dr. Chadha has around 16 books and 84 research papers to his credit. Ten Research projects, seven done with international collaboration and three completed with national funding are to his name fourteen research scholars have successfully completed their doctoral thesis under his watchful guidance. Dr. G K Chadha is a much decorated academician with a plethora of awards and honour from various bodies. He has been awarded D.Litt (honoris cause) by P. U., Chandigarh. He is an expert in Economics of Education and Development Economics. His contribution in the formulation of education policy particular the higher education is great.

While assuming the captaincy of this flagship college of DAV CMC, New Delhi, I am overwhelmed by holy feelings of reverence, awe and gratitude. More so, as this great academic monolith has been my own almamater. Like you, I too have roamed its vast campus and drunk deep at this fountain-head of knowledge. Since its inception, The DAV College, Jalandhar has been the first choice with all those seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Arts, Commerce and Science. We have students not only from our own state, country but also from abroad. Our highly qualified, Innovative, skilled, knowledgeable and commited Core, Adjunct and Visiting faculty, innovative teaching techniques, state-of-the-art practical labs, cyber library, all contribute to the distinguished position our students enjoy today. My youthful days were once anchored here. Now, as a principal, heading D.A.V college offers a really big challange as one has to match one's performance with the predecessors who are many ways the role-models.
