Zoology Department
Biology department of the College was opened in 1935 with Prof G.L Chopra as head of the department. The department ran F.Sc (Medical) Classes upto 1942. Then it was raised to a graduate department. This was the second college in east Punjab to which the Punjab University, Lahore Granted affiliation for the B.Sc classes in the subject of Zoology with the introduction of three year degree course in B.Sc zoology and premedical classes were started. Post graduate course in zoology was introduced in 2003 under the headship of Prof. P.D.Singhal . The admission was based upon an entrance test for which 290 forms were received from many states and only 30 students were admitted on merit and qualifying entrance test. In the next year i.e. 2004, total number of seats for M.Sc were raised to 35 as allocated by the university.

Special set up for emerging sciences:

Biotechnology professional course was introduced under emerging sciences in 2005. The admission was done on merit basic for 40 seats. A new course under the UGC scheme was also introduced i.e. “Certificate course in Biotechnology” to be up graded to diploma course in 2007-08 and degree course in 2008- 09. A new elective subject of bioinformatics was also started under UGC scheme for B.Sc I students.

The Zoology department has been showing excellent results and its students been winning top positions and largest number of first classes and scholarships in the University examinational .

M.Sc. Zoology is the latest but much in demand course at DAV College Jalandhar, which offers commendable placement opportunities in variety of sectors.The Department has state of the art infrastructure with well-developed research links nationally and internationally. The academic staff in Zoology have collaborations with researchers in various universities. The department has tied up ith Indian Biological Association.

B.Sc. with 50% marks in aggregate and 50% in Zoology.

Department of zoology is equipped with hi tech labs and latest equipment required for PG courses and biotechnology (Professional) course. The department is having 4 well equipped labs and one zoological museum. The museum is equipped with rare collections made from country and abroad by personal efforts by the members of the staff and students. Department is having one PG Lab, one senior lab, Two under graduate labs. Department is first to introduce E-learning programmer through bluetooth and wireless technology.

We have C24 cooling centrifuge machine and GMTV-445 digital microscope with camera with 100x oil immersion. A complete electrophoresis set up with power unit is also available in the department.
 
Recently laminar an – floe chamber and UV – Visible spectrophotometer are purchased. We do have high precision weighing balances, PH meter etc.

Collaboration with other Departments:-

Department of zoology and emerging science (biotechnology and bio informatics) are interacting and closely associating with department of computer sciences and department of mathematics. Special paper of bio-stat is being taught by teachers of economics department. The teachers of zoology are involved in teaching their subject to the students of M.Sc (Chemistry). The emerging sciences are integrating the different specialized fields of all the departments.
