The Department of Mathematics is the pride of the college. It has produced some of the best students of Mathematics who are earning fame for themselves and the college is in flying colours.

From the very start of the college in the year 1918 to the year 1929, the Department of the Mathematics had been run by Prof. Kishan Chand who reited as Vice Principal at that time, there were only intermediate classes. The degree classes were started in the year 1929 when Prof. Bansi Lal M.A (Hons. School) and first class first, took over as head of department. A year later, Hons. classes were introduced in 1930. Of the very first batch that appeared in Hons. Exam., in 1932, Sh .F.C Auluck (later did D.Sc. and retired as Prof. and Head of Deptt. of  Physics, Delhi university) stood first in the university. Since then it has built up a glorious record in the matter of results in the university exams, which have been unique in the province both in quality and quantity.

M.A classes in Mathematics ware started in the year 1948 and in the very first year, the first position in the university was secured by our student Shri Roshan Lal Mehindru. The department was further strengthened by the appointment of Prof. D.R Jain, an old student of the college, in the year 1952. The result since M.A Exam has been very brilliant.
Prof Bansi Lal retired from service in the year 1965 and he was succeeded by Prof. D.R. Jain as Head of the Deptt. It is a matter of great pride and satisfaction that he had accomplished the arduous task of maintaining the glorious traditions set up by his predecessor. He was assisted by 13 other member of the department namely Prof. P.S. Puri, Kartar Singh, G.L. Setya, J.R. Jetlie, V.K. Kohli, M.L.Aggarwal, N.K. Dass, T.R Nagpal, M.M Khanna, P.K Nayyar, P.N Gaba, C.L Ahuja, Romesh Kumar.
All teachers starting with Prof. G.L Setya did their post graduation from D.A.V college Jalandhar itself.

On the sudden and untimely demise of Prof. D.R. Jain on 18.12.1974, Prof. Kartar Singh took over as Head of the Deptt. He continued upto 19.3.1975 and handed over the reins of deptt. to Prof. G.L. Setya on 20.3.1975. The deptt. continued to maintain its brilliant traditions under his able guidance. He was succeeded by Prof. N.K. Dass, Prof. T.R. Nagpal and then by Prof. Romesh Kumar on 1.11.2001 who is continuing as head of deptt. till date. Another unit of 60 students was allowed by GNDU Amritsar temporarily w.e.f 2003-2004.
Second unit was allowed on permanent basis from 2004-2005, the deptt. got affiliation as an associate institute under Directorate of Distance Education of GNDU and the number of student in M.Sc.-I rose to more than 200 and the deptt. had 3 sections of  M.Sc.I and 2 sections of M.Sc II during the session 2005-06. Under the expert guidance of Prof. Romesh Kumar, the Deptt. is not only maintaining the previous traditions, but attaining greater heights.

The Deptt. established its own library in 2002-03. It is proposed to build a hi-fi building of the deptt. in the name of Prof. Bansi Lal Ji.

Senior faculty members of the deptt. are on the selection panels of various institutions in and around Jalandhar which helps in the placement of our students.
Devi Dayal Mathematical society takes care of the co-curricular activities of the deptt. It organizes:

• Welcome function for new entrants of M.Sc. I
• Farewell function in honour of outgoing student of M.Sc. II
• Arranges lectures by eminent scholars from different universities.
• Lohri Kurian Di with an emphasis to start festivity on the birth of a girl child.

Activities

1 (i) Syllabi of M.Sc. I and M.Sc. II reorganized by GNDU and introduced five papers for                     each class. Our college introduced options of
 (a) Statistics, (b) Numerical analysis at M.Sc .II level.
 (iii) Syllabus of T.D.C. I,II and III was also reorganized by GNDU. Three papers in mathematics for each class were introduced. Paper of complex Analysis was introduced at T.D.C III level.
2. Department library was established in the year 2002-03.
3. Merit classes and class test were introduced wef 2004-05.
4. In touch with Mathematics Department of GNDU, Amritsar.
5. Research is not a significant activity.    
6. (i) Prof.Romesh kumar has been Incharge of Timetable Committee and a member of Academic Council.
   (ii) Prof. Ajay Aggarwal and Prof. Sameer Sharma are working as members of the time     table committee.
(iii) Prof. S.K Tuli (captain) is working as Officer Incharge NCC (Army Wing) and Prof.  Sameer Sharma is also commissioned as NCC officer (Lieutenant).
(iv) Prof. S.K. Tuli, Prof. Anju Chhabra , Prof. Sameer Sharma and Prof. Ashu Bahl worked as president of Devi Dayal Mathematical Society which takes care of extracurricular  activities of the department.

7. Department is in contact with various institutions in Jalandhar and around and helped the students in getting job as Mathematics Teachers and Senior Members work as members of selection committee.                                     
8. (i) First Positions in the University continuously for last four years 2003,2004,2005 and 2006.
(ii) Pass percentage of M.Sc.-I had remained around 90 and that of M.Sc-II more than 98.
(iii) Option of Mathematical Programming and C++ will be introduced at M.Sc.-II level and an internet laboratory will be established.
(iv) Hi-Fi seminar-cum-lecture room will be established for conferences and seminars.
(v) More books for the departmental library will be procured.
(vi) It is proposed to build up Prof. Bansi Lal Memorial Mathematics Block.
